Access to information is at an all-time high. Preachers can easily get their next sermon from a book or from the Internet. They can incorporate all the trappings of psychology and the ability to “work a crowd”. But is this really a presentation of the word of God?
Even though the Apostle Paul was very capable of leveraging the wisdom of men, he took a decidedly different approach. In 1 Corinthians, he tells the church:
“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power…” (2:4).
Why did he take such a route? What was the apostle’s purpose? Why was he so, so careful? He tells us in the next verse:
“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (v. 5).
